The Somerset Hills YMCA will host the 12th annual Flag Day 5K Run at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 13, at the Y, 140 Mount Airy Road in Basking Ridge. Proceeds will benefit homeless and wounded veterans at Community Hope’s Hope for Veterans Transitional Housing Program and Valley Brook Village, which is currently under construction at the nearby Lyons Veterans Administration (VA) Medical Center campus.
The New Jersey Devil, the hockey team’s mascot, will be on hand to greet event participants and cheer on the runners. The VA Color Guard will lead the runners to the starting line. With thousands of former servicemen and women sleeping on the street or in shelters on any given night in New Jersey, the Y has been dedicating the event to helping homeless veterans for the past 11 years.
As a non-profit, the Y’s cause is to strengthen the community by providing opportunities for everyone to build a healthy spirit, mind and body. Community Hope is the largest charity in New Jersey serving homeless veterans and veteran families struggling with the invisible wounds of war. This year’s event supports the development of Valley Brook Village for Veterans, which will help provide affordable housing and access to support services and employment opportunities for 62 veterans. “One of our three key areas of focus is social responsibility and, as an organization dedicated to helping people learn, grow and thrive, the Somerset Hills YMCA is proud to lend its support to helping our veterans in need through the Flag Day 5K,” said Sue Diebold, senior director of Wellness and Sports at the Somerset Hills YMCA. The Flag Day 5K race will be run on a fast and flat course. Runners will begin and end the race at the Y on Mount Airy Road. Mile markers will be available and time will be provided by Bestrace computer services. – See more at: http://valleybrookvillagenj.com/ymcas-flag-day-5k-run-in-bernards-township-to-help-homeless-veterans/#sthash.LmbkEJ8l.dpuf
